Meet Lucy Brooke, the Holderness Historian
Hello, and welcome to my blog. This has been on my to-do list for a very long time!
I originally trained as an archaeologist, getting my hands dirty on the Malham Landscape Project, the Tudor blockhouse in Hull, and Bronze Age barrows on the Holderness coast among other digs.
I then joined the family ironmongery business for many years, before leaving to start a housekeeping and gardening service specialising in historic buildings.
I write and present regular talks on aspects of Holderness history (particularly folklore, superstition and the stranger stories from our past) for Hedon History Talks and other organisations. I work on the annual Hull and East Riding Heritage Events and volunteer at the Scheduled Ancient Monument, Fort Paull.
I also write features and short fiction for various publications.
My illustrated talks include original research and new discoveries — not just rehashes of the same old stories — and cover a wide range of topics: from women’s lives to food, the supernatural, ritual and folklore, and seasonal customs and celebrations.
